The Guardian

The building was erected during WWI, in 1914-18. William Gummer designed it in the Chicago style as a “Stripped Classical” commercial building. The Guardian was one of Auckland’s first high-rise buildings of the modern era, signalling an end to the Victorian style and the dawn of a new era. The construction materials are steel for the frame, terrazzo floors, and Kairuru marble lines the walls. The elegant façade features large pillars cloaked in bronze.

The Guardian was the tallest building in Auckland until the 1960s. It remains precious as the last high-rise building used for commercial purposes. The Council of Auckland classifies the Guardian as a heritage building of outstanding natural beauty with architectural and historical significance.
